Ellen and her parents have grown accustomed to living with wartime food rationing, but news that Ellen's classmate Marjorie has been stricken with polio causes fear of an epidemic in the community. There are other fears, too --- (of the war and for the many who've enlisted at risk to their lives. When Ellen becomes ill and must recuperate at home, she does a lot of thinking --- (about the war, what she can do to help the men overseas, and how she can cheer up her sick friend.
